This weekend was spent filming games at a lax tournement down in Maryland. It opened my eyes to a few things. First, it’s crazy how many players and parents come from all over to play in these games, all of which are out of season and mean absolutely nothing. But this isn’t unusual, it happens in all sports all over. But it’s amazing how instense people get. This is the kind of intense I’m talking about.. some kids (most likely heavily influenced by their parents) will actually transfer to a prep school because they believe they’ll get better looks from schools for college ball. Problem is, they’ll sit the bench 2, sometimes even 3 years to play at one of these high shools. Then, ok, say they do get offered to play at some top notch school, the whole process will most likely be repeated: sit 2-3 years to have a shot at a golden senior year. This works out for some people. It doesn’t exactly check out for me.. I went to a middle of the run high school and a decent Div III college program. I can’t say I ever played in a state championship or a top Div I school. But I can say, for the prime of my lacrosse career (the last 8 years), I actually played. I started as a freshman in HS and did the same at FDU. I played a sport because I loved the competion. Practices, lifting, and everything else that goes along with playing a team sport were of course fun with th guys at times, but overall everything outside of games was considered work more than enjoyment. It was the games that made it all worth it. I can’t understad some peoples logic sometimes, willing to pass up all these years for something that I think sounds a lot better in conversation than it does in real life. Play ball kids, don’t sit the bench.
